Anemia is caused by deficiency of iron in the blood. There are many types of anemia depending on the nature of iron which is in low level. Some of the common types are Sickle Cell Anemia, anemia due to B-12 deficiency, Hemolytic Anemia and pemicious anemia.

Hemoglobin is the substance that is present in the red blood cells and people suffering from anemia will not have enough number of hemoglobin. Heavy menstrual periods resulting in blood loss can also cause anemia. Intake of powerful medicines, alterations in immune system, chronic diseases like cancer and Rheumatoid Arthritis can also cause anemia.

Some of the symptoms of anemia or iron deficiency include feeling grumpy and weak, fatigue after exercising, frequent Headaches and difficulty in concentrating. In some people, the skin may change pale and white, the eyes color can become bluish, the nails may become tender and there may be shortness of breath.

Treatment of anemia is by taking iron-rich nutritional foods daily. You can add folic acid and vitamin B12 as supplementary medicine in consultation with your doctor. Blood transfusion is done on severe cases of anemia. Some doctors would give erythropoietin for increasing the production of red blood cells in bone marrow.
