Kawasaki Disease






Kawasaki disease is a condition of inflammation of blood vessels in the entire body affecting the growth of infants. KD is the primary cause for getting acquired heart problems in children.


Some of the symptoms of KD are fever, rashes on the body with more numbers in groin, reddish eyes, cracked lips and Swollen Lymph Nodes. The children are very often irritable and cannot be controlled.










Kawasaki disease is purely genetic in nature and rarely an infection can cause these symptoms. Lowered level of immunity is said to be the primary cause for KD. The exact cause for inheriting this disease is still unknown.


Treatment for KD is difficult and the child should be handled by team of doctors who have experience in treating this disease. Doctors in the field of cardiology, infectious diseases and rheumatology will work together for recovering the child.


Intravenous immunoglobulin is the best possible treatment available for Kawasaki Disease and the doctor will start with high dose, tapering it gradually for controlling fever and related symptoms. Some children respond well to corticosteroids combined with IVIG method of treatment. Aspirin is given for some children who give positive response but will have serious side effects.
