Ocular Migraine






Ocular migraine is temporary loss of vision or partial blindness that would last when you have migraine Headache. It is also called as ophthalmic migraine meaning loss of vision due to migraine. This problem occurs for one in 200 persons who have the history of migraine and severe headache.


The exact cause of ocular migraine is not known. Factors like smoking and Hypertension could trigger this symptom. Dehydration, lowered blood sugar, over exercise, consumption of alcohol in large doses can also be a reason for getting ocular migraine. The loss of vision is only an episode and would last for half an hour or more and the person will recover from blindness shortly after.










The symptoms of ocular migraine are sudden blindness in the eyes, flashing lights on the retina and temporary vision loss. The person may get moderate to severe headache that would last for hours and even days. Some people would also have nausea, vomiting and high sensitivity. Another important sign of this disease is it affects the vision in only one eye and not on both.


No treatment is necessary for ocular migraine. But sometimes the doctor may prescribe aspirin, tricyclic antidepressant drugs, anti Epilepsy medicines and beta blockers.
