Polycythemia Vera






Polycythemia vera is a condition in there is abnormal increase of blood cells in bone marrow. It is basically a disease in bone marrow which is responsible for production of red blood cells. It is a rare disorder and occurs more in men than women.


Symptoms of this disease are shortness of breath, Headache, dizziness, excess of bleeding, enlarged Spleen, redness on the face, itchy after taking bath, and fullness of abdomen. In some cases, there may be tiny red spots on the skin and rare vision problem.










The exact cause for polycythemia vera is unknown.


Phlebotomy is the procedure done for decreasing the thickness of blood. Generally one unit of blood is removed per week until the thickness is reached to normal level. Chemotherapy is also given for decreasing the red blood cells in bone marrow. A drug by name Anagrelide is prescribed for lowering the platelet count.
