Pseudotumor Cerebri

Pseudotumor Cerebri

Pseudotumor cerebri looks like tumor in brain but actually is not a tumor. This condition occurs mostly in women and in particular in obese women who are in the stage of menopause.

There is no specific cause for this disorder/condition. But taking medicines like contraceptive pills can increase the risk of getting this condition. Drugs like minocylcine, cyclosporine, phenytoin, sulfa drugs, and steroids can cause this problem in women. Sometimes, anemic condition, and obesity will trigger this disease. If the woman already has chronic kidney problem or Addison’s disease she is more prone to get psudotumor cerebri.

The symptoms of this disease are blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, hearing buzzing sound, and temporary vision loss. The symptoms may get severe when the person engages in physical activity. The doctor will examine the person and suggest for CT scan or lumbar puncture for diagnosing the disease. He would look for bulging fontanelle and increased head size and swelling of nerve in the eyes.

Lumbar puncture is done for curing the symptoms and that would relieve the pressure on the brain. In some cases, corticosteroid medicines are prescribed for reducing the intensity of symptoms. The person may be put on low salt diet and in some cases surgery is done to set right the optical nerve pressure. To avoid

permanent vision loss, the patient should monitor their eyes with ophthalmologist.
