Torn Meniscus

Torn Meniscus

The common knee injury is called as torn meniscus. When you indulge in any activity which forces the knee muscles to rotate suddenly, it can cause high pressure on the knee leading to torn meniscus. The knee contains 2 menisci which are ‘C’ shaped cartilage acting as a cushion between the thighbone and shinbone.

When there is full pressure it can become stiff and cause inflammation. Taking rest or applying ice is enough to give relief from pain.

Some of the symptoms are pain in moving the knees, popping sensation, inflammation and stiffness on the knee portion. It is very likely that every one of us experience a torn meniscus when we rotate or turn the knee aggressively.

No treatment is required for this condition. Take enough rest. In case of severe pain, apply ice to the affected area. Over the counter painkillers like Ibuprofen can provide relief. Physiotherapy is done for strengthening the muscles of knee and legs. In rare cases, surgery is done when the knee muscles gets locked.
