Encopresis

Encopresis

Encopresis is the disease connected with incontinence of stool. It is a condition in which the child passes stools voluntarily after taking the toilet training thus wetting his clothes.

The main cause for encopresis is Constipation. Very often, the stool gets converted into hard fecal substances which remain in the colon making it difficult to find route through the small opening. The child will only pass the semi-liquid stool and retains the balance inside the colon. He would then leak the stool involuntarily when he sleeps or engage in other activities. If the child is made to drink water regularly, it would soften the stool, thus making it easy for him to pass out the stool.

Some other causes for encopresis are improper toilet training, fear and emotional disturbance. Whenever the child soils the clothes, he or she would have the feeling of shame and guilt and may tend to become an introvert.

Symptoms of encopresis are inability to retail feces, Bowel Incontinence, soiling his clothes frequently, constipation and secret bowel movements.

Treatment for encopresis is to prevent constipation and bowel incontinence. Giving stool softeners will help the child to overcome this problem. Changing the diet of the child, including lots of fruits and fiber rich diet will help him to soften his stool. Encourage the child to take plenty of water. Parents should understand the problem and be supportive instead of criticizing the child before others. This would make the problem worse.

In rare cases, psychotherapy is given for evaluating the underlying feeling of guilt and shame.
