Stye Eye

Stye Eye

Stye eye is a painful condition that is marked by the formation of small lumps on the eyelids. It is an acute eye infection caused by oily glands of the eye. When the glands are blocked it leads to the accumulation of oil which would extrude through the gland forming red blisters on the eyelids. Due to the presence of excess of oil (moisture) bacteria easily enters the gland causing infection. This would cause inflammation and redness with pain on the area surrounding the eyelids. Hordeolum is the medical term given for stye eye.

Stye eye is formed in either one eyelid or both. The lump is clearly visible and marked as yellowish or whitish spot on the eyelids. It is easy to treat stye eye by draining the accumulated pus inside the lump.

Causes :

Stye is caused by bacterial infection. Often it is the staphylococcus bacteria that cause eye infection. The oily gland produces oil for lubricating the eye, but when the oil is secreted in excess (this condition is called seborrhea) it gets blocked on the opening of gland causing painful lumps.

Very often it is caused by improper usage of eye cosmetics or frequently changing eye makeup. If the person is not maintaining hygienic eyelids it can cause Stye eye. Certain diseases like Rosacea acne and Blepharitis can induce excess of oil from the gland leading to stye. Change in hormone or hormonal imbalance can cause eye infection.

External stye eye is caused by eyelash infection of bacteria resulting in swelling. It begins as Staph Infection close to the follicles of glands thus blocking other glands on the eyelid. Internal hordeolum is a serious type of eye infection originating from meibomian gland present below the surface of eyelid. Since it occupies the center portion of the eyelids it would cause more pain and discomfort than the external type of infection.

Symptoms :

Some of the common signs of stye are swelling of eyelids, itching, pain, and redness and burning of eyes and lumps or blister formation on the eyelids. The infected area becomes tender to touch. It can cause drooping of eyelids and it becomes difficult to open the eyes. You may feel like presence of scratches on the eyeball. It can affect the vision leading to distorted vision. There will be excess of mucus secretion from the infected eye.

When to see your doctor?

If there is swelling, redness, irritation on the eyes with disturbance in vision you need to seek immediate medical attention. For some people eyelashes start falling out and white part inside the eye changes into red color.

Diagnoses :

The ophthalmologist will examine your eyes through microscopic device to identify the intensity of infection. In case the infection has spread to eye socket then you will be asked to take CT scan.

Treatment :

Stye eye does not require any treatment often since it will resolve on its own within few days. You can take care of your eyes by applying warm compression several times a day for clearing the clogged pores and for draining the oil inside. Never attempt to squeeze your eyes since it will worsen the infection. Avoid using any eye cosmetics and facial makeup once you get infected. In case you are wearing contact lenses discontinue using it since stye eye infection can affect the lenses spreading to your cornea.

In case of pain and discomfort you can take Tylenol or other painkillers available over the counter.

Your doctor would prescribe topical antibiotics or oral antibiotics like Doxycycline for managing bacterial infection. The treatment becomes difficult if the person has rosacea or blepharitis symptoms and infection. Widespread infection can be treated by powerful antibiotics and you have to continue the drugs as instructed by your doctor.

In rare cases your ophthalmologist would drain the pus inside by making small incision for removing large lumps formed on the eyelid.

Surgery is the last option for stye eye and the doctor will make incision only on the inner part of your eyelid for removing the pus like fluid inside. This is a short procedure and can be performed easily in the office.

Prevention :

You can easily avoid sty infection if you practice good eye hygiene. You need to wash your face and eyes with cold water for preventing any infection. Once in a while you can apply warm compression on the eyelids for facilitating free movement of oils secreted from the glands.

Do not change your eye cosmetics and never share it with anyone since you can catch infection from others.

What is a Stye?

This is a common contamination of the hair follicle of an eyelash, similar to a sore which is comparable to a pimple or a boil. The gland at the edge of the eyelid gets clogged from debris, excessive oil and bacteria and become swollen, irritated and very painful to touch. The stye follows when the bacterium staphylococcal infects one of the small clogged glands at the base of the hairs of the eyelid. This bacterium is commonly moves from one shaft of hair to another while rubbing it to relieve the itching.

Stye Eye Symptoms

Individuals with styes often complain of:

  • Tenderness

  • Watery eyes

  • Pain

  • Itching

  • Redness round the stye

  • Reddish colored Bump on Eyelid

When the stye first starts, the eye can feel like it has been bruised and can be light sensitive. It may be felt for up to 2 days even before the stye is visible.

In styes become severe, a spot can grow in the center which is yellow, comparable to a pimple. This is known as an “internal hordeolum”, it grows as pus accumulates in the stye. Pain largely goes away when the stye breaks open and pus drains. Several styes do not form this type head, and the pus continues to amass. Some oversized styes can confine the vision.

Most styes swell and stay irritated for approximately three days before they finally break open and drain and then they typically take about a week to heal.

Stye Eye Causes

Some individuals with prolonged Blepharitis are very prone to clog glands on the eyelids, where bacteria grow and often infect the glands. The sharing of eye make-up or using excessive eye makeup often creates styes. Old eye makeup that may have bacteria in them should be replaced.
Eye strain is also a major factor in the start of styes.

Stye Eye Treatment

Treatment of a Stye includes:

  • Warm compress – lightly press a warm compress over the eyelid for 10 minutes up to four times each day

  • Massage – lightly massage the total area to help haste healing

  • Medication –Start with an over the counter medication. Attempt an ointment for example Stye, or a solution such as Bausch and Lomb Eye Wash or pads which are medicated such as Ocusoft EyeLid Scrub. Antibiotic ointments and eye drops help heal infections. If the surrounding skin around the stye becomes also infected, antibiotic pills are probably necessary.

Two important tips include:

  • Allow the stye to open up on its own. Don’t squeeze or push open the stye.

  • Don’t wear any eye makeup nor contact lenses until the stye completely heals

Complications can occur. If the stye doesn’t heal in a fairly short time period, it may develop into a Chalazion. A chalazion normally starts once the oil gland turns out to be infected and creates a blockage. The blockage makes the gland become further inflamed. The inflammation and pain ultimately go away, but a very hard lump or bump stays on the eyelid. An injection of steroid may diminish swelling or an eye doctor can endorse the chalazion be lanced or surgically opened to remove the material inside.

Home Remedies

Use these herbal home remedies at the first symptoms of discomfort, for example, redness, pain, or watering. Some tips for these are listed below:

  • Boil one teaspoon of turmeric in 2 cups of water. Reduce to one cup, cool and strain 3 to 4 times thru a finely woven cotton fabric. The extract which is left can be used as eye drops. Use a drop in the infected eye up to 4 times a day. This should help to get rid of the stye.

  • Boil a teaspoon full of coriander seeds with one cup of water – basically as you would make herbal tea. Use this as an eye wash 3 to 4 times daily.

  • Guava leaves can also be used – warm and place on a warm damp washcloth, and use as a compress over the eye. This should reduce the pain, redness, as well as swelling.

  • Dissolve 2-3 granules of alum in one cup of water and use as eyewash.

  • Rub the spice clove in water and applied on the stye. This should give relief from the stye and will help get rid of the stye.

Stye Eye Prevention

To help styes from develop:

  • Do not rub the eyes. This only irritates the eyes as well as lets in bacteria. If you must touch the eyes, wash the hands first.

  • Replace your eye makeup frequently, especially mascara at the very least once every six months. Bacteria grow in old eye makeup.

  • Treat infections or inflammations of the eyelids immediately.

  • If an individual is prone to styes, regularly wash the eyelids with a small amount of baby shampoo which is mixed in warm water.
