Coughing up Phlegm






We all cough to remove the unwanted substances from the lungs and from the air passages. People cough for several reasons and the basic purpose of coughing is to eliminate the mucous and phlegm that blocks the nasal passages. Sometimes, repeated coughing may disturb your sleep and might cause breathing problem.


Cough can be due to infection when bacteria or virus affects the lungs or upper respiratory tract. It can be non-infectious like chronic Bronchitis, sinus and Asthma problem. Coughing can be the result of taking medications like Ace Inhibitors for Hypertension and pressure. Cigarette smoking is one of the major causes for coughing with phlegm. It causes Allergy in the nasal passage and lungs adding more particles of pollution and tobacco. Cough can be due asthma, bronchitis, and Sinusitis and lung infection. Cough may also occur when there is fluid accumulation in the lungs.










The best home remedy for irritant cough is to drink more fluids. Drink plenty of water to keep the balance of lost water due to phlegm. Take honey mixed with hot water for reducing the irritant cough. The dryness will fade by taking lemon tea. Avoid smoking when you have cough. Stay indoors and avoid going out in polluted environment. Wear mask in case you need to go out.


Treatment for cough should be in identifying the real root cause for the problem and not just giving medicines for eliminating the symptoms. Simple non infectious cough will get settled if you take cough suppressant for 2 or 3 days. In case of severe cough more than 3 weeks, you should consult the doctor for identifying the problem. Taking narcotic medicines will ease out the cough and facilitate sleep during night but it can be sedative. Cough due to viral infection should be treated with antibiotics.
