Leaking Amniotic Fluid

Leaking Amniotic Fluid

It is the watery particle that surrounds the fetus in the womb of women. The amniotic fluid is necessary for managing free movement of the baby inside. Further this fluid serves as a cushion for the baby for protecting it from any trauma caused to the uterus.

Normally, amniotic fluid starts piling up in the uterus of pregnant women right from the second week of fertilization. Slowly, the fluid gets filled with necessary electrolytes, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates required for the fetus developing inside. During the last stage of pregnancy, the fluid would contain the fecal discharge of the fetus.

Leaking amniotic fluid is indicative of onset of labor. The baby prepares itself for coming out of the uterus once there is drainage of amniotic fluid. But sometimes, there will be mild leakage due to rupture in the lining of amniotic sac. It can be controlled by adding excess of saline water into the uterus bag and by using fetal membrane sealants.

Symptoms :

It is difficult to say for a women whether she is leaking amniotic fluid or not during her pregnancy. The growing fetus exerts enough pressure on the wall of the uterus so it is normal to expect some watery discharge from the cervix. For many women, there may be leakage of urine frequently which is often mistaken for leakage of amniotic fluid.

During the last trimester of pregnancy, it is quite common for many women to have some leakage. The amniotic fluid will soak the undergarments. The fluid discharge is odorless and colorless unlike urine. It is necessary for the women to monitor the color of the liquid using sanitary napkin. In case of doubt, she can consult her doctor.

In case of excess of leakage, treatment has to be done to stop it immediately, failing which the fetus may get affected. If it is time for delivery, then the doctor will make arrangement for safe delivery of the baby once there is leakage of amniotic fluid.

Causes :

It is quite normal for amniotic fluid to get discharged when the pregnancy term is complete. Once you complete the full term pregnancy, the membranes of the amniotic sac will burst open and pushes the amniotic fluid outward. It would facilitate the baby to push its way towards the cervix. This process is called “spontaneous rupture of membranes” or water breaking.

However there may be small rupture in the middle of pregnancy term causing moderate leakage of fluid. You need to consult your gynecologist immediately to find out the exact cause that triggers discharge of amniotic fluid. It is defined as premature rupture and it is necessary to fix it up.

It can be due to infection caused on the amniotic sac or due to sudden injury caused by fall.

You need not bother about the small leakage of amniotic fluid which is because of mild tear in the amniotic sac, which will settle on its own.

Treatment :

For a woman who has completed her full term of pregnancy it is normal to get leakage of amniotic fluid which indicates that it is time for her labor pain.

But in case of discharge during the middle of the term doctors will try to stop the leakage after finding the root cause.

Amniofusion is the method by which artificial saline water is sent inside the amniotic sac for keeping the fetus safe. This additional fluid will help the fetus to grow safely till the time of delivery.

Some doctors use fetal membrane sealants for stopping the leakage due to rupture of membranes.
