Leukoplakia is characterized by the presence of hairy structures on the tongue and inside cheeks. For this reason it is also called hairy leukoplakia. Very rarely it may also develop on female genitals.

Causes :

Exact cause for hairy leukoplakia is unknown. It is believed that it affects the mucus membranes present in the mouth causing irritation. Irritation can also occur due to rough edges of dentures and fillings, smoking, using tobacco and holding pipe for long time.

Some say that hairy leukoplakia is an indication of AIDS infection. Usually this disorder is seen on elderly people.

It may also occur if your immune system is weakened or you have undergone bone marrow transplant.

Itching on the mouth, sores on the mouth which are whitish grey, are some of the signs of leukoplakia. These sores may turn red (erythroplakia) indicative of cancer and sometimes they are thick and slightly elevated.

Very often, skin biopsy is done for checking the presence of leukoplakia. The lesion and bumps developed on the mouth become rough and raised somewhat protruding on the tongue. It may be sensitive to touch and you may have difficulty in taking spicy hot foods.

Treatment :

Your doctor will first find out the root cause that causes irritation in the mouth and remove it promptly. Lesions may slowly disappear if it is formed by irritant products on the mouth. He will look for irregular dental fixtures and fillings and remove them early. In case you are smoking, then it is time now to quit smoking in any form. Avoid taking alcohol.

Lesions causing leukoplakia can be removed surgically. Your doctor will apply local anesthesia for cutting and removing the lesion from the tongue. In case these lesions are found on vulva, the same method is adopted to remove them.
