2 Day Periods – Causes, Signs, Treatment.






Menstrual period cycle varies from one woman to the other. Even for the same woman period between one cycle and the next may not be the same all the time. Normal menstrual cycle ranges anywhere from 28-35 days and it occurs roughly two weeks after ovulation. Every healthy woman would have 11-13 times of menstrual periods each year.


Monthly period of vaginal discharge may lasts from 2-5 days under normal health condition. Having vaginal discharge for two days is not a matter of concern. But if you are on reproductive phase and trying to become pregnant this 2 day period may worry you. Remember you cannot be pregnant once you have Vaginal Bleeding. Once the egg gets fertilized it gets implanted on the walls of the uterus. This process can cause some bleeding for one or two days. In case you have had unprotected sex recently and if you have spotting of brown color it is time for you to visit your doctor.


Getting 2 days period can be a sign of pregnancy but one cannot say for sure. Vaginal spotting stops suddenly after 2 days if the egg gets fertilized. But there are other signs like feeling of tiredness, hormonal changes causing excitement or depressive feeling and frequent urination. Your breast would become tender and nipples can become sore and dark in color. Morning sickness and nausea is another marked feature of pregnancy for many women. Dizziness, Headache and fatigue are common signs during pregnancy. Craving for specific food items is common among pregnant women.










It is not necessary that every pregnant woman may have the above symptoms. Some of them may not have any of the above signs but still become pregnant. It is better to get yourself examined with your doctor to confirm whether it is pregnancy symptoms or not.


Possible Causes Of 2 Day Period :


1. Estrogen


The hormone estrogen plays a vital role in becoming pregnant or getting menstrual period. The level of estrogen would be high in adolescent ages and adulthood and it would gradually reduce as a woman becomes 40 or 45 and completely stops after menopause. Vaginal spots can occur due to fluctuating levels of estrogen. Your period can become irregular due to altering levels of estrogen hormone. Any change in the estrogen hormone can lead to shorter period or lengthy period, depending on the situation.


2. Contraceptives


Most of the women getting short (2 day period) would be using some kind of contraceptives. It can be oral pills or in the form of shot. This contraceptive injection can significantly affect the secretion of estrogen. Women who are using method of implanted intrauterine device for postponing pregnancy are more likely to get frequent vaginal spotting than others.


3. Stress


Women who are facing sudden stressful events (both physical and mental) can have 2 day spotting in between the periods. Frequent quarreling and physical abuse can cause sudden vaginal discharge. If there is high level of mental stress it can cause Vaginitis) or urinary infection.


4. Exercise


Athletes are more likely to get 2 day periods than others due to increased physical stress. Women who have started vigorous exercise like workouts in a gym or running exercise can get 2 day periods.

5. Loss Of Weight


Sudden loss of weight can alter the menstrual cycle and estrogen levels which can cause irregular periods. Similarly if you are putting on weight quickly it can cause 2 day spotting or delayed periods. Your body responds effectively for any change in the metabolism.


6. Anemia


If the levels of iron in your blood get reduced it can cause 2 day periods or even 1 day period. In that case there would be other symptoms like fatigue and extreme tiredness.


7. Chronic Disease


Women with Diabetes (uncontrolled) and chronic problems like liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome or TB can have short period for 2 days in between monthly cycle. Any other new disorder in your system can cause irregular periods.


If there is any change in normal periods and even if there is no symptoms you can check with your doctor. It is better to go for pregnancy test than being in the fear of it. It is common for you to get worried if something goes wrong with the routine. Even if the vaginal bleeding is light and lasts for only a day, still you can visit your doctor to rule out things that are bothering you.


8. Analyze Your Period


Before getting an appointment with your doctor you can examine the vaginal spotting. Your doctor would for sure to ask few questions about the vaginal bleeding and hence you have to be prepared to answer them. Check the flow of bleeding and color and note down if there is any changes. Also make it a habit to write the dates of vaginal discharge so that it becomes easy to find the expected date. You would not miss your period if you are clear about the expected dates. Discuss with your doctor if you get the monthly period in advance or delayed. She would be helping you to find the right answer.


Watch For These Signs :



  • Fatigue

  • Morning sickness

  • Frequent urination

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Tenderness of breasts


Pregnancy Test :


Home test can be useful to check if you are pregnant. But you cannot rely on home test totally. In case if you want accurate picture you can do pregnancy test at your doctor’s office.


Treatment :


No treatment is required if your menstrual cycle gets back to normal and if there is no other symptoms given above. It is alright if you have some of the above signs if you are planning to become pregnant. But women who do not want to conceive should be careful in taking precautions while having sexual intercourse and use any of the safe contraceptive methods as suggested by your doctor.
