Home Remedies For Fever






Fever is a condition that increases the body temperature. In medical terms fever is known as pyrexia is caused primarily by cold or infection. In some cases fever is caused by Ear infection, skin infection or vital organs like lungs or kidney infection. It is the Hypothalamus in the brain that regulates body temperature. When something goes wrong in the body the hypothalamus automatically resets the body temperature. Body temperature exceeding 99.5 Fahrenheit is considered to be fever. Fever symptoms can be easily managed by taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Fever can cause increase in temperature along with other signs like body pain, muscle pain, Headache, slight sHIVering, discomfort, Dehydration and a general feeling of tiredness.

1. Wet Compression :










Soak a soft cloth or towel in cool water for few minutes, wring out the water and wipe the areas of face, forehead, armpits, hands and feet. For babies, you can do this for the entire body. By applying wet compression, the body temperature would automatically reduce. This is a simple remedy for treating fever. Repeat this process several times a day. You can also place wet clothing on the back of neck and on your forehead. Tale the cloth and again repeat this wet compression at regular intervals until the fever reduces.


2. Complete Rest :


Fever is in symptom that something is wrong in your body. Hence you need to take complete rest avoiding any kind of activities. The body’s defense mechanism would come into action to normalize the body temperature in few hours. Fever caused by infection has to be treated medically.


3. Lukewarm Water Bath :


If you are not feeling tired, you can try bathing in lukewarm water. This is an effective home remedy to bring down the body temperature. But don’t bath in cool water since it can worsen the symptom.


4. Keep Hydrated :


It is very much essential to keep yourself hydrated when you are suffering from fever. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water. You can drink any fruit juices like apple, orange or grapes. Getting dark urine or yellow colored urine is common during fever. Fruit juice rich in vitamin C is helpful in fighting infection. By adding more of fluid intake the color of the urine can become normal. You can also take sports drink to replace the lost fluids in the body.


5. Herbal Tea :


Drinking herbal tea is beneficial for treating fever. Herbal tea has many advantages like triggering the immune system, opening up pores, increase sweating and reduces tiredness in the body. Yarrow tea helps in increasing sweat indirectly reducing the fever. Similarly elderflower tea and hot ginger tea are excellent home remedies for treating cold and fever. The body temperature automatically reduces when you sweat.


6. Soup With Pepper :


Drink hot vegetable soup with cayenne pepper sprinkled on it. Hot pepper can cause sweating thus helping in reducing fever.

7. Wet Socks :


It is hard to determine whether this remedy works out for fever. All you need to do is to wet your socks and insert your feet into it. This can indirectly draw blood to your feet thus improving blood circulation and reducing fever. Alternatively you can use soft cloth dipped in egg white and place it on the soles of your feet and cover it up with socks. Egg white has the capacity to cool the body by absorbing the heat thus reducing fever.


8. Wet Sheet Covering :


Like cold compression, this remedy involves in covering the entire body with wet sheet. Soak a sheet in cold water and after wringing it cover the sheet in your body. You can use a large towel or blanket for this purpose and leave it in your body for 15 minutes. You can also repeat this remedy many times a day whenever the body temperature shoots up.


9. Basil Tea :


Basil is an excellent home remedy for treating fever, since it has similar property and healing power as that of an antibiotic. Add a handful of basil leaves and half an inch of ginger in a cup of water and boil it. Continue boiling it until the solution gets reduced. Now add few drops of honey to this solution for taste and drink it. By taking this decoction 3-4 times a day fever gets reduced automatically. This is a good remedy for getting rid of tiredness and body pain after fever.


10. Vinegar Solution Bath :


Add about half a cup of apple cider vinegar to bathtub of lukewarm water and soak your body for 10 minutes in this solution. Vinegar bath is an effective home remedy for fever since it takes out the heat from your body thus reducing the temperature. Soak a clean towel in vinegar solution and after wringing it place it on your forehead and on your back. Repeat this process once the towel gets warm. This is a simple yet effective remedy for fever.


11. Raisins :


Raisins contain essential phytonutrients for fighting bacteria and thus help in reducing fever. Raisins can boost your immune system to fight against fever. Soak few pieces of raisins in a cup of water for an hour and drink this juice along with raisins.
