Chlorine Poisoning

Chlorine Poisoning Chlorine has been used for a very long time to dispose unclean water. It is a chemical that prevents growth of bacteria in water. It is used in sanitation of sewage and industrial waste and is also present in cleaning products used in house-holds.

When chlorine comes in contact with water it forms hydrochloric acid and hydrochlorous acid which are poisonous in nature. Chlorine Poisoning can occur when chlorine is inhaled, ingested or comes in contact with the skin or internal Mucus membrane. The diagnosis and treatment of chlorine poisoning depends on the route and duration of exposure.

What Can Cause Chlorine Poisoning?

Most people are aware of the presence of chlorine in pool water. However, ingestion of pool water does not cause chlorine poisoning. When household cleaners are ingested or inhaled, it causes chlorine poisoning. It is extremely dangerous if you mix toilet bowl cleaner with bleach, as the mixture will release yellow-green chlorine gas which could be fatal if inhaled too much. Given below is a list of conditions in which you may be impacted with chlorine poisoning:

  • When cleaning products are mixed with bleach or ammonia, it releases chloramine gas and cause bleach poisoning.

  • When container containing chlorine is opened after being stored for a long time, it can release gas, which when inhaled can cause poisoning.

  • Other sources of chlorine are mild cleaners, bleach products and tablets used in swimming pool water.

What Are the Symptoms of Chlorine Poisoning?
Chlorine poisoning can cause the symptoms to appear all over the body and affects most of the systems of the body. Some of the symptoms are given below:

  • Difficulty in breathing, accumulation of Fluid in lungs

  • Burning sensation in mouth, swelling in the throat

  • Throat and stomach pain, vomiting and presence of Blood In Stools

  • Acid levels in body change, low Blood Pressure

  • Burning and irritation of the eyes, temporary loss of vision

  • Tissue damage, burns and irritation of the skin

When to See a Doctor
If anyone has come in contact with chlorine or has been exposed to it, they should be taken to the hospital immediately. If it is ingested, induced vomiting should not be tried unless suggested by poison control team or medical professional.

How to Deal with Chlorine Poisoning
When someone is exposed to chlorine, they can take the following steps to reduce the intensity of the chlorine poisoning:

  • Evacuate the place where chlorine was released and get fresh air. In case the exposure occurs indoors, leave the place and move outdoors. If the exposure happens outside, move to another place, preferably with increased height. Chlorine gas is heavy and sinks to low lying areas.

  • Remove the clothes which you were wearing during exposure and washing your body is recommended along with taking immediate medical attention. It is important to wash the body with soap and water, which will ensure that the chemical is removed from the body.

  • Clothes which are contaminated by liquid chlorine and require to be removed over the head should be cut off from the body. Seal the contaminated clothes in a plastic bag and double bag it to prevent any further contamination. Handover the plastic bags to health department or emergency personnel and avoid direct contact with the part of the clothes which have chlorine on it.

  • Wash with plain water for 10 – 15 minutes if a person's eyes has been contacted. In case the person is wearing contact lenses, the lenses should be removed and packed in plastic bag and then the eyes should be rinsed. These contact lenses should not be reused and should be disposed according to the instruction from medical professionals. Eye glasses should be washed with soap and water and can be reused after complete cleaning.

  • If a person has ingested chlorine, vomiting should not be induced and medical attention should be sought immediately.

How to Prevent Chlorine Poisoning
Prevention of chlorine poisoning can be done by proper handling of chlorine and avoiding ingestion of any chlorine containing products. Any household products which contain chlorine should be placed away in locked cabinets and stored away from children. Also, before you use any products containing chloride, always read the instruction carefully.

Chlorine Poisoning

Chlorine Poisoning

Chlorine is a harmless chemical used in industry and even in some household produce. Chlorine exists as a yellowish green colored gas but it can be compressed to form a liquid for storing purpose. Chlorine has peculiar pungent odor smelling very much like bleaching agent. It can be easily detected if exposed owing to its pungent smell.

Uses :

Chlorine is largely used in producing many pesticides and solvents and also in paper and clothing industry. Chlorine can be used in drinking water (in small quantities) and for cleaning industrial waste and sewage. In swimming pool or any form of stagnant water chlorine is used for killing bacteria.

Chlorine Poisoning :

Chlorine poisoning is a condition in which one inhales chlorine gas or swallows liquid form of chlorine accidentally. This chemical reacts with water forming HCL (hydrochloric acid) which is poisonous. Often chlorine poisoning cases occur due to ingestion of household items like bleaching powder and cleaners, that contain chlorine and not due to swallowing pool water.

In What Ways Chlorine Can Become Poisonous?

Any sudden outburst of chlorine gas in the air is poisonous as it spreads quickly. People can easily inhale it while breathing which can get into the lungs causing complications. The gas can enter the eyes or even skin causing severe irritation. Chlorine (gas or liquid) as such is not poisonous, but it reacts with water inside the body to form hydrochloric acid which is highly poisonous. Chlorine ingestion can occur if a person happens to drink chlorinated water and by eating chlorinated food.

Symptoms :

Shortly after the exposure to chlorine gas/liquid the concentration of chlorine in the blood increases causing blurred vision and burning sensation in the eyes, nose and throat. The skin would become irritating forming blisters and bumps causing redness and pain. The person would start coughing continuously leading to shortness of breath and choking. Some people would lose conscious due to difficulty in breathing. All the above symptoms include chlorine poisoning in the form of liquid.

In case an individual inhales chlorine (in excess) in the form of gas leakage, it can cause signs of nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and wheezing. Due to excess of fluid accumulation in the lungs it may lead to pulmonary Edema. Chlorine poisoning would affect your entire body affecting many vital systems. Level of acid in the blood would suddenly increase causing serious consequences. For some people, vision loss can occur due to persistent irritation and burning sensation of eyes.

Critical Steps To Be Taken :

  • If you are exposed to chlorine gas leakage leave the place quickly and go to a place where you can get enough fresh air.

  • Move away to the highest building in the area quickly if chlorine gas leak is on outdoors, since chlorine occupies ground level largely (it is heavier than air).

  • For exposure to chlorine in the form of liquid, you need to remove the clothes (since it can contain traces of chlorine) and put on new clothes after washing your body with soap water.

  • You should not use that clothing again and if possible you need to find an air-tight bag to dump clothes in it. This would prevent further exposure of chlorine to others.

  • To act quickly you can even cut your clothes instead of removing it over head.

  • If your eyes are itchy and burning you need to rinse the eyes thoroughly with cool water.

  • To prevent skin damage wash your body quickly with plenty of soap and water.

  • Don’t attempt to induce vomiting if someone has ingested chlorine; instead rush him/her to the hospital.

Chlorine Poisoning

Diagnosis :

No special tests are needed to detect chlorine poison, since the symptoms are self explanatory.

Treatment :

Once the person is taken to the emergency room the medical staff will do all the possible steps to stabilize the patient. He would be given supportive oxygen to remove excess of chlorine from the body. In the meantime, your doctor will collect information about the amount of chlorine inhaled or swallowed and how long the patient was exposed to chlorine.

The patient will be put on breathing tube if he has serious problem in breathing. Doctors would check the condition of the throat to know the damage caused to the airways or lungs. After stabilizing the patient, thin tubing would be inserted into his stomach to flush off all the chlorine inside. The eyes will be washed with plenty of fresh water to remove excess of chlorine if there is eye irritation. No antidote has been discovered to treat chlorine poisoning.

Outlook :

If the patient is admitted to the hospital quickly there is more chance for survival and recovery. The more the delay and more the exposure of chlorine, the worst will be the outcome. In severe cases of chlorine poisoning, survival rate is very low.

Prevention :

Take effective measures to store chlorine household products in closed closets and out of reach of children. Call the poison control center immediately to know the methods of treating the patient before taking him to the hospital.
