Right Side Abdominal (Stomach ) Pain






Any Chronic Pain in the abdomen with other symptoms like fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and Constipation is to be addressed soon. Prompt examination by a doctor is necessary to find out the cause. Right abdominal pain indicates region below the ribcage which extends till the pelvic floor. The major organs present in the right upper portion are liver, gallbladder, stomach, duodenum and appendix followed b sigmoid colon. Any deviation from normal functions in the above organs can cause mild to severe pain in the right side of the abdomen.


It is not only the stomach that performs digestive function but many organs put together work on the food we eat and convert them into energy. Number of blood vessels run through these organs which are connected to a network called aorta. Any block in these blood vessels can cause swelling and abdominal pain. Women have uterus, ovaries and other reproductive parts in the pelvic region which can also cause pain in the lower right abdomen.

Causes :


Often the causes of lower abdominal pain are due to underlying organs or muscles.



  • Liver Problems :


Liver occupies major portion of right abdomen and hence any infection or disorder can cause intense pain in the abdomen. Hepatitis A is a type of liver infection caused by eating contaminated foods which gets transmitted easily from infected person to others. Similarly hepatitis B and C are infectious diseases causing Jaundice and intense abdomen pain.



  • Gallbladder :


Gallbladder can get infected or presence of stones can cause chronic pain in the right abdomen. Pancreatitis and kidney infection and diseases can cause pain in the abdomen.



  • Heart Related Disorders :


Cardiovascular problems can sometimes reflect abdomen causing pain. There are some people who get cramps and excruciating pain in the abdomen and discomfort in the chest before getting an attack.



  • Lungs :


Lung infection and lung related disorders like Pneumonia can sometimes cause abdominal pain.



  • Pelvic Disorders :


Women can get infected on the uterus or vagina wherein pain can radiate towards the pain along with vaginal pain. These are known as “referred” diseases since pain is directed from other parts towards abdomen. Infection can occur anywhere in the digestive system causing sudden pain along with symptoms like vomiting, Diarrhea and tiredness. Do not ignore these signs and consult your GP quickly.



  • Pregnancy :


As the uterus continues to grow to accommodate the infant, other organs will be pushed upwards high in the abdomen. This can generate pain and indigestion for women.



Abscess is a collection of mass containing pus inside and it can form anywhere in the abdomen. Abscess is a serious problem which requires being drained surgically warranting immediate attention.



  • Ulcers :


Gastritis can lead to Peptic Ulcer causing severe pain in the abdomen. In some cases it can cause perforation and internal bleeding which is a medical emergency.

Diagnosis :


Your doctor will complete physical examination and order for additional tests to confirm his analysis. This includes complete blood test, urine analysis, and rectum test.


Home Remedies :



  • Restrict high fat food and fried items since it is not good for your health.

  • Instead of eating large amounts of food 3 times, take frequent foods in small amounts. This helps in easy digestion.

  • Avoid gas producing foods.

  • If you have indigestion taking antacids and eating a blanch diet can help.

Medical Treatment :


Your doctor will start with treatment after getting the report from lab tests. Treatment is different for different medical conditions. Mild abdominal pain can be managed through aspirin. But if you have chronic pain with other symptoms please check with your GP. Some conditions can cause complications and hence if you have strong additional signs pay attention to it and consult your doctor.
