What is Nummular eczema






It is a skin disorder characterized by the presence of dark spots and patches on the surface of the skin. It is a form of Allergy disorder.


Causes :










Persons with family history of allergic disorder like Asthma and atopic dermatitis are prone to get nummular eczema. But the exact cause of this disorder is not known. It is commonly seen on old age people but can occur on middle aged adults also.


People who live in stressful lifestyle and working in great variations of temperature are likely to get this eczema. Certain factors from environment like workplaces in which there is constant exposure to strong chemicals and irritant materials also increase the risk of this disorder.


Symptoms :


Some of the common symptoms of this disorder are coin shaped lesions or bumps on the skin. It can occur anywhere like hands, legs, or in the middle of the body. These lesions gradually start becoming crusty and ooze out fluids spreading more infection. There may be painful itching on the affected area and the skin may become scaly with reddish color. For some people there may be swelling due to inflammation.


Diagnoses :


Skin biopsy is done for diagnosing the disease after physically examining the body for lesions and dry patches.


Treatment :


Self care at home:


Avoid working in stressful environment and places in which there is more chance for contacting irritants. Leave the skin without touching it often. Also do not wash or take bath very often, since it may cause dryness worsening the problem.


You can try over the counter topical ointments for treating the skin infection. Your doctor may prescribe skin lotions and moist bandages for controlling itching. You can also apply cold compressors on the skin to get relief.

Medical care :


Oral antihistamines will provide great relief from severe itching.


Drugs containing corticosteroids are given for managing nummular eczema. But follow the doctor’s instruction while taking this drug, either orally or as injection.
