What Is A Blue Waffle Disease – Real Or Fake? Is Blue Waffles Disease A STD?

What Is Blue Waffles Disease?

The term Blue Waffle is coined for a sexually transmitted disease which is not officially recognized as a disease by medical community. A lot of data is nowadays being seen on the web relating to this, although it is still not clear whether this is true or fake. Waffle is the slang given for vagina. The vagina and other genital areas look blue in this disease, hence the name blue waffle disease.

Who All Can Be Afflicted By Blue Waffles Disease?

Blue waffles disease is said to occur more in women than men and in people with autoimmune condition.  It can be transmitted from women to men. It is still not quite known why only women get this disease, but it may be due to the moist and damp condition in the vagina which allows microorganisms to thrive there.

What Is The Cause Of Blue Waffles Disease?

Although it is thought still to be a fictional disease and not yet recognized by medical science, there is enough information being found on this and hence it cannot be ignored totally. It is a vaginal infection associated with discharge, swelling, sensitivity and itching in that area and it turns vagina into somewhat of a blue to purplish color.

How Does Blue Waffles Disease Occur?

  • Blue waffles disease is said to be a sexually transmitted disease
  • It occurs in people having sexual intercourse more often without protection
  • People having more than one sexual partner
  • Keeping the vaginal area unclean, not maintaining proper hygiene
  • Bacterial or fungal infection
  • Wearing tight undergarments/ jeans
  • People with decreased immunity
  • People with autoimmune condition are said to be having more inclination for this disease
  • Not changing tampons or sanitary pads often
  • Sharing of unhygienic sex toys
  • Improper food intake, lack of essential minerals and vitamins which in turn leads to developing low immunity
  • Changing feminine hygiene washes frequently, as chemicals in these can be unsuitable and also change vaginal pH
  • Anxiety and Stress can lead to low immunity and cause the infection
  • Not having regular exercise routine can again cause sedentary lifestyle leading to low immune system hence prone to this disease.

What Are The Symptoms And Signs Of Blue Waffles Disease?

  • Foul smelling odor in the vaginal area
  • Itching in the vaginal area
  • May have some lesions
  • Blue to purplish discoloration of outer and inner vaginal area
  • Unusual thick vaginal discharge
  • Burning sensation around vagina
  • Sensitivity and swelling of vaginal area due to the thick discharge
  • Severe pain in the pelvic region
  • Feeling of fullness and pain in stomach due to swelling and sensitivity in pelvic region
  • May experience pain during intercourse
  • Fever, nausea, vomiting, tiredness
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Infertility.

What Is The Course Of This Disease?

Having unprotected intercourse, not keeping the vaginal area clean causes bacterial proliferation in the genital area. Along with this, if you are dealing with stress, having low immunity, have any autoimmune condition or any of the above reasons discussed, leads you to be more prone to developing this disease. You will then have some foul-smelling odor in your vaginal area, itching, burning, irritation or pain.  The vagina gets sensitive and swollen.  The color of the vagina and surrounding areas turns blue. The swelling is seen in the region of vagina and labia. There may be some red patches and lesions.

What Is The Prevention And Treatment?

Although still lot of research needs to be done and this disease is still not medically documented and it might just be slang for a person having STD, it needs to be taken seriously like any STD.

  • If you have the above discussed signs and symptoms, visit your doctor immediately
  • Your doctor may advise abstinence
  • Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infection. Take the prescribed course of antibiotics
  • If you have Yeast Infection, your doctor will give you antifungal creams. When you have vaginal discharge and swelling, the yeast will get an environment to grow. Hence treating yeast infection helps you get rid of itchiness and foul odor
  • You should wear clean cotton undergarments. Wearing loose clothes helps proper air circulation. Cotton helps absorb the vaginal discharge. It is comfortable and not irritant to the skin
  • Keep your genital area clean and dry. Do not allow it to become damp and moist as moist environment becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi
  • Do not change feminine hygiene wash frequently and do not use wash which contain harsh chemicals.  Use feminine wash containing lactate or lactic acid which helps recover vaginal pH and decreases contamination
  • Avoid intercourse with more than one partner and always use protection.

Does Blue Waffles Disease Really Exist?

People are still confused as to the existence of this disease. This disease is quite new and still does not find its existence in any of the medical books or journals. Medical community is still trying to find more information about this disease and many doctors have called it a hoax saying that the pictures of blue vagina might be photo shopped and even if there is any bluish discoloration of vagina, it might be due to some bruising.  There is no medical condition yet found where the vagina turns bright blue. It might be just a fake story or news to scare people and it is not documented anywhere in journals and doctors themselves are finding this a new term which they have never heard before.

Whatever the reason, if you think you are dealing with any of the signs or symptoms described above related to blue waffle disease, you should be alarmed enough to visit your healthcare provider and get yourself examined, as you may be suffering from any other sexually transmitted disease and it will always help doctors find out if any patient comes with the blue vaginal discoloration along with other symptoms and really whether there exists a condition called blue waffle disease.

Since blue waffle disease is one of the many sexually transmitted diseases (others are more thoroughly documented though like Syphilis, Gonorrhea etc.), it should be taken seriously like other STDs, as STDs you know are quite serious. The blue discoloration of genital area (not yet proven though) may indicate some serious vaginal infection.

When Do You Need To Visit Your Healthcare Provider?

If you are swollen down there in your vaginal area and having pelvic pain and discomfort, or having any of the symptoms listed above visit your healthcare provider and check out whether you have acquired any STD.

Conclusion

We still do not know whether the blue waffle disease really does exist or not, but taking precautions will never harm you and it will prevent you from acquiring other sexually transmitted diseases as well. It is found all over the web, but still not found in any of the medical journals, so it is yet difficult to say what we are dealing with now.

As of now, there is no information to suggest there is a condition where vagina turns blue in color. Keeping yourself clean, dry and hygienic, having a healthy diet and exercise routine, avoiding stress, always using protection during sex will not only help you protect yourself against blue waffle disease (if it does exist)but also against all the other real sexually transmitted diseases out there.
